From “Island Alone” to Finding Her People
At 24 years old, Allison LaCoursiere was suddenly asked to step into the role of dental office manager—without formal training and without a roadmap. Living in Bermuda, she quickly realized the job came with more than responsibility; it came with isolation.
“I felt like I was alone in the journey,” she shared. Not just emotionally on an “island,” but literally on one. The transition from peer to leader left her navigating team dynamics, expectations, and decision-making without a support system.
Like many new managers, she questioned if there was even a community that could understand what she was going through.
The moment everything changed
A coach encouraged her to attend a conference hosted by American Association of Dental Office Management (AADOM). With her doctor’s support, she flew alone to San Antonio.
Walking into a room filled with hundreds of dental office managers was overwhelming in the best way.
“I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes,” she said. “It was the first time I didn’t feel alone.”
That experience changed her trajectory. She returned to her practice with confidence, connection, and a new sense of direction—and soon became a lifetime AADOM member.
Finding growth through community
After conference, Allison leaned into AADOM’s education and resources, using online learning to build her skills while staying connected to others in the field. She also made a personal commitment to never miss another conference.
More importantly, she began building relationships with other office managers who understood her challenges, creating a support system that extended beyond her own practice.
From manager to leader and mentor
What started as a search for support eventually shaped her entire career path. Today, Allison is a speaker, coach, and consultant helping others grow in dentistry and beyond.
Her work now focuses on helping leaders—especially women in business—step into bigger opportunities, build confidence, and expand their impact.
Her message to dental leaders
Allison’s biggest takeaway is simple: you don’t have to do this alone.
Her advice for office managers today:
- Learn the fundamentals before adding new technology
- Be intentional about what problems you’re trying to solve
- Use community and mentorship to grow faster and avoid burnout
And most importantly: stay curious, and believe in what’s possible for your career.
