Balancing Work and Life in Dental Office Management: Strategies for Finding Harmony

Real-World Insights from Jerilynn Shrader, FAADOM.

“Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.” – Albert Schweitzer.

As dental office managers, we hold the pivotal role of ensuring our practice runs smoothly while simultaneously supporting our team and patients. Amidst our busy schedules, it’s essential to find a balance between work and personal life, not just for ourselves, but for the well-being of our entire dental community.

Here’s why I’m passionate about achieving that balance.

Patient Care

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance allows me to be more present and focused when it comes to patient care. When I feel energized and fulfilled outside of work, I can provide the warmth and attention our patients deserve.

For instance, I prioritize reading as a way to unwind and explore new ideas, which keeps my mind engaged and relaxed. I also practice meditation, which helps me cultivate mindfulness and reduce stress. These activities allow me to recharge and return to work feeling revitalized.

After dedicating time to my personal wellness, I can approach patient consultations with a clear mind, allowing for more meaningful conversations.

This direct impact on patient satisfaction fuels my passion for creating a welcoming environment where our patients feel valued and cared for.

A happy dental team with great morale.

Team Morale

A balanced life fosters a positive workplace culture. When I prioritize my own well-being, I can better support my team, leading by example.

For example, I organized for a massage therapist to come into the office to provide 15-minute massages for our staff. This initiative not only helped reduce stress but also served as a gesture of appreciation for their hard work.

Encouraging the team to take breaks and invest in self-care promotes a happy, motivated environment. Together, we can create an atmosphere of collaboration and trust, which is vital for a successful dental practice.

Personal Growth

Striking a balance between work and life is essential for personal growth. I am motivated to better myself through continuous learning, whether it’s taking continuing education courses, listening to webinars, or engaging with my AADOM tribe. These resources help me grow and further develop my skill set, allowing me to be the best leader for my staff and doctors.

I believe in the mantra of “never stop learning,” which is why I am pursuing my Mastership from the American Association of Dental Office Management.

This journey not only enhances my professional capabilities but also allows me to bring fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the practice, ultimately benefiting our patients and team.
