The Power of Connection: How Networking Strengthens Leadership in Dental Practice Management

Real-World Insights from Danielle Hewson, MAADOM.

As dental office managers, we often focus on the internal operations of our practices—our teams, our patients, and our systems. However, some of the most impactful growth happens outside our office walls.

Networking and relationship-building within both the dental community and the broader community you serve are essential components of effective leadership. These connections not only provide support and insight, but they also elevate your ability to lead with confidence and make informed decisions.

Building a Network Within the Dental Community

One of the most valuable investments I have made in my career is building relationships with other dental office managers in my community.

There is something powerful about surrounding yourself with like-minded professionals who understand the unique challenges of our role. Whether it’s navigating staffing concerns, evaluating new vendors, or managing patient expectations, having a trusted network creates a space where you can openly share ideas, ask questions, and gain perspective.

I have developed relationships with several office managers whom I connect with on a monthly or quarterly basis. These conversations have become an essential part of my leadership toolkit. Sometimes it’s simply having a listening ear; other times, it’s collaborating on solutions or sharing best practices. Often, someone in the group has already faced a similar situation and can offer insight that saves both time and resources.

Expanding beyond general practice has also been incredibly beneficial. Building relationships with specialty office managers—including oral surgery, endodontic, and orthodontic practices—as well as local dental labs, has strengthened our ability to serve patients more effectively.

When you have established connections, communication becomes seamless, and collaboration is more efficient.

There have been times when these relationships have allowed us to advocate for patients in meaningful ways—whether that meant coordinating care more quickly, troubleshooting a case, or simply ensuring a smoother overall experience. These partnerships ultimately enhance the level of care we provide.

Leveraging Professional Organizations for Growth

In addition to local networking, I have found tremendous value in being part of the American Association of Dental Office Management. Last year, I obtained my FAADOM certification, and I received my MAADOM certification this year.

AADOM provides a level of support, education, and connection that is difficult to replicate elsewhere. Through their on-demand webinar library, e-Campus training, and resources focused on insurance, financial management, and leadership development, I have been able to continuously grow in my role.

One of the most impactful experiences has been attending the annual AADOM conference. This event brings together dental leaders from across the country, creating an environment centered on learning, collaboration, and professional growth. From industry-specific workshops to keynote presentations and networking opportunities, the conference offers both practical tools and renewed inspiration.

Equally valuable are the connections made during these events. Engaging with other professionals, sharing experiences, and learning from respected industry leaders has broadened my perspective and strengthened my approach to practice management.

Growing Beyond Dentistry: Expanding Leadership Skills

While industry-specific networking is essential, I also believe that strong leadership is developed by learning beyond your immediate field.

In 2021, I challenged myself to step outside of my comfort zone by applying to and being accepted into a Women’s Leadership Program through the North Dakota Women’s Business Center. This experience allowed me to connect with women from a variety of industries, each bringing different perspectives on leadership, communication, and business strategy.

Through this program, I not only expanded my professional network but also gained a deeper understanding of my own leadership style. It pushed me to think differently, communicate more effectively, and lead with greater intention.

Bringing those insights back into my dental practice has been invaluable. It reinforced the idea that while dentistry is a unique field, strong leadership principles are universal.

Connection as a Leadership Strategy

Over time, I have learned that leadership is not something you develop in isolation.

The relationships you build—within your practice, your industry, and your community—play a critical role in your success. Networking provides support during challenges, inspiration for growth, and opportunities to continuously improve.

By intentionally investing in these connections, you not only strengthen your own leadership skills but also enhance your ability to lead your team, support your patients, and contribute meaningfully to the dental community.

In a role that can often feel demanding and fast-paced, having a strong network isn’t just beneficial—it’s essential.
