How Tariff Increases May Impact Dental Offices—And How to Prepare

Real-World Insights from Amanda Matthews, FAADOM.

As President Trump moves forward with imposing tariff increases, dental offices across the country are likely to feel the impact in significant ways. From rising equipment and supply costs to delays in receiving critical supplies, dental office managers must stay proactive in navigating these economic challenges.

These new tariffs are expected to increase the costs of equipment and supplies, such as dental tools and materials, as well as items like dental chairs, x-ray machines, and handpieces. When tariffs increase the cost of these items, suppliers will ultimately pass that cost on to their customers, directly affecting the budgets of our dental offices.

Supply Chain Disruptions

Beyond the increased cost of supplies, we are likely to face delivery delays of supplies due to supply chain disruptions. It has been well documented that this is a direct consequence of increased tariffs. A delay in the delivery of supplies and parts can cost a dental office a lot more than just the overhead.

Think about what a delay in the delivery of critical items such as replacement parts for dental chairs, sterilization machines, or imaging equipment would do. These things could not only put a strain on operations but also completely halt operations entirely until necessary supplies are received.

Know Your Numbers

It is for this reason that we must have a clear picture of your practice’s operating costs to assess its financial health. Knowing your break-even point and tracking income against expenses is crucial for planning ahead and making adjustments to meet your financial goals.

I highly recommend reading “Dental Management Tips” from AADOM’s 2024 Office Manager of the Year -Single Location Practice, Tamara Whitley of DAADOM. Her article offers invaluable insights on practice metrics and other practical strategies that every dental office manager should know.

Strategic Supply Management

Now is also a good time to talk to your dental supply representatives about the origin of your most commonly used products and ask if they will be subject to the tariffs. Some suppliers may offer contracts that lock in prices for a specific period.

Another thing I’ve seen in the past is suppliers offering special benefits or services if you agree to shop with them exclusively. Your supply representatives can also give you insight on how to place your orders more strategically, such as ordering high-use items in larger quantities to take advantage of bulk discounts, etc.

They may also be able to help you identify US-based products that, although not always less expensive, may offer more stable pricing and faster turnaround times.

Communication with Patients

Even though it may be outside of some of our comfort zones, it’s important to communicate clearly with patients about the increased operational costs and their direct effect on your practice. It doesn’t have to be a lengthy explanation—just a simple, informative message that reinforces your commitment to delivering excellent care.

Transparency builds trust, and our patients are more likely to understand when they see that we are committed to maintaining the highest standards, even in the face of yet another economic challenge.
