Is Your Dentist Happy?

Real-World Insights from Katerina O-Donoghue, DAADOM.

When I was thinking about topics for my articles, I had a very interesting conversation with my doctor. He asked me, “What is the most important thing in my job?”

I immediately started thinking about my “why.” I began going through my daily responsibilities in my head—making sure the schedule is full, helping patients understand treatment, supporting my team, keeping the day organized, and making sure everything runs smoothly.

Most of us would probably do the same. We immediately go through our day-to-day tasks, trying to identify what is most important and why we do it. We focus on productivity, patient experience, and team communication.

But his answer surprised me. He said: “The most important thing in your job is to make me happy.”

At first, that sounds selfish. But when you look deeper, it actually makes a lot of sense.

How a Doctor’s Mood Affects the Practice

A doctor’s mood affects the entire office. I’m sure we’ve all experienced that. When the doctor is stressed, running behind, frustrated, or dealing with something that didn’t go according to plan, that tension spreads quickly throughout the office. The team feels it almost immediately. The energy changes. Communication becomes shorter. People get nervous.

And patients can feel it too. If the team feels tense or disorganized, patients feel uncertain—which can affect their confidence in the practice.

On the other hand, when everything goes smoothly—when you’re on time, the day is running well, and goals are being met—the energy is completely different. Everyone thrives. The doctor is calmer, the team is more confident, and patients feel more relaxed.

That is why mindset and environment are so important in a dental practice. As a leader, you are responsible for helping shape that environment. As office managers, we are not only responsible for systems and organization—we are also responsible for helping create the atmosphere of the office. The tone of the day often starts with how prepared and aligned the team is.

What Actually Makes a Doctor Happy

So, what exactly makes your doctor happy?

Of course, the answer will be different for every doctor. When I asked mine, his response was surprisingly simple: no drama, everyone knowing what they are doing for the day, and a full schedule that doesn’t overwhelm him.

Doctors spend their entire day making clinical decisions, solving problems, and carrying responsibility for patient outcomes. When the systems around them are chaotic, when communication is unclear, or when the schedule constantly feels like a crisis, it adds enormous pressure to their day.

But when the team is prepared, aligned, and working together, it makes all the difference.

A happy doctor does not mean a perfect day—dentistry rarely allows for that. Things will go wrong. Patients will be late. Procedures will take longer than expected. What matters is that the systems and team around the doctor help absorb those challenges instead of amplifying them.

Supporting Your Doctor

When your doctor feels supported and confident in the team, everything changes. In many ways, the role of an office manager is to remove unnecessary friction from the doctor’s day. When the team is aligned and everyone speaks with one message, the doctor does not have to carry the entire burden of the day alone.

As leaders of our teams, maybe we should ask ourselves a simple question: “Is my doctor happy?” Because sometimes improving the health of the practice starts with supporting the person at the center of it.
