From Learner to Leader: My Journey to Launching an AADOM DPLN
For the past 16 years, dentistry has been more than just a career for me—it has been a calling.
I started my career as a medical assistant, then moved to a new state and stumbled into dentistry. What began as an unexpected opportunity quickly turned into a lifelong passion for patient care, practice growth, and, most importantly, community.
Along the way, I discovered something even greater than dentistry itself: the power of connection.
The Power of Networks
When I was first introduced to the American Association of Dental Office Management (AADOM), I never could have imagined how deeply it would shape me both personally and professionally. Through Dental Professional Learning Networks (DPLNs), I found a place where like-minded professionals gathered to share ideas, solve challenges, and celebrate wins together.
Being an active member of three different DPLNs taught me the value of collaboration beyond the walls of my practice. Each meeting brought new insights, friendships, and the kind of encouragement you can only get from those who walk the same path.
Courage to Start Something New
But as much as I loved learning from others, there was a quiet voice inside me nudging me toward something bigger. After years of showing up, leaning in, and building relationships, I realized it was time to take a leap: to start a DPLN of my own.
Launching the Alexandria Collaborative Dental Connection (ACDC) wasn’t just about adding another network to the map. It was about creating a space that reflected my vision—one where doctors, hygienists, assistants, and administrative professionals could come together as equals to grow side by side. ACDC isn’t just a study club; it’s a community built on collaboration, inclusivity, and purpose.
Milestones That Mattered
This journey was fueled by milestones that gave me the confidence to lead. In 2023, I earned my Fellow distinction (FAADOM), a moment that validated the years of dedication I had poured into my profession.
Just two years later, in 2025, I proudly crossed the stage to receive my Master’s (MAADOM). And now I am focused on the highest distinction AADOM offers, Diplomate (DAADOM).
These accomplishments aren’t just letters after my name—they are reminders that persistence pays off, and that growth comes when you surround yourself with people who push you higher.
A Practice That Feels Like Home
Of course, none of this could be possible without the support I’ve found at Alexandria Old Town Dental. From the moment I joined, I was welcomed into a team that celebrates not only what I bring to the practice, but also the professional dreams I chase outside of it.
They cheer for my milestones, encourage me to lead boldly, and remind me daily that dentistry isn’t just about healthy smiles—it’s about building a culture where people thrive.
Looking Ahead
As I step into this next chapter with ACDC, I’m filled with both gratitude and excitement. Gratitude for the mentors, colleagues, and friends who helped me believe in myself. And excitement for the opportunity to pay it forward, creating a space where other dental professionals can find the courage to grow, connect, and lead.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in 16 years, it’s this: when we lift each other up, the entire profession rises.

Melissa Cortes is the Office Manager at Alexandria Old Town Dental, bringing over 15 years of experience in specialty and multi‑specialty practices. A MAADOM and Lifetime AADOM Member, she is currently pursuing her Diplomate credential and actively serves on several nonprofit boards and professional networks.
She founded the Alexandria Collaborative Dental Connection to provide inclusive, role‑specific education for dental teams. Outside the office, Melissa enjoys life with her husband and three children, runs a creative small business, and finds peace tending her garden.
