Stop Waiting Until You’re Ready: Growing Into Your Role
If there’s one thing I’ve learned throughout my career, it’s this—I have never felt ready for any new role I’ve stepped into.
Not once.
From clinical assistant to new patient coordinator, to insurance coordinator, to scheduling coordinator, to financial coordinator, and now to assistant practice manager—every single transition came with the same thoughts:
- What if I’m not good enough for this position?
- What if this requires more focus and mental strength than I’m capable of?
- What if I fall flat on my face… or end up hating it?
That fear and doubt showed up every single time. But I said yes anyway.
I’ve always believed that when you step into something new, one of two things is going to happen—you’re either going to be really great at it, or really not. And the truth is, both outcomes are okay. Either way, you learn something about yourself.
You learn what you enjoy.
You learn what challenges you.
And sometimes, you learn that what you thought you loved isn’t actually where you’re meant to stay.
I loved assisting. I really did. But after spending time on the administrative side, I realized something I never expected—I’m a much better administrative professional than I ever was at assisting. Honestly, just ask the doctor I accidentally hit in the head with the overhead light during my working interview—and somehow still got the job. That probably should have been my first clue.
Growth has a funny way of showing you where you truly belong. However, growth doesn’t happen when you stay comfortable. It happens when you step into something new—before you feel ready.
Confidence Comes After You Take the Step
One of the biggest shifts for me was learning to stop being so hard on myself. I had to let go of the fear and doubt I was holding onto and give myself some grace. Being uncomfortable in the beginning didn’t mean I wasn’t capable—it meant I was growing.
And that discomfort? It pushed me into roles that I now genuinely love and find incredibly rewarding.
If you’re waiting until you feel completely ready to take the next step in your career, you might be waiting longer than you need to.
Confidence doesn’t come before the opportunity—it comes after you step into it.
Say Yes, Even When You’re Not Ready
You don’t have to have everything figured out. You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be willing to try, to learn, and to grow through the process.
So, say yes to every opportunity that comes your way!
Even if it scares you.
Even if you’re unsure.
Even if you feel like you might fail.
Because the truth is, failure isn’t the worst thing that can happen. Sometimes it’s the very thing that moves you forward into something even better than you planned.
Stop waiting until you’re ready.
Trust yourself enough to take the step—and give yourself the chance to grow into the role you’re meant for.
