Team Building Tips to Create an Engaged and High-Performing Team

Real-World Insights from Janet Alvis, FAADOM.

In today’s workplace, demands are more complex than ever—for both leadership and support staff. Regardless of the role, every team member wants to feel valued, respected, and appreciated. As a manager, the way you demonstrate that value directly impacts your team’s morale, engagement, and performance.

With my 35 years in the dental industry and over 25 years managing dental practices, I’ve seen firsthand how intentional team-building efforts can transform a workplace. Below are some practical, proven strategies to help you cultivate an engaged, motivated, and high-performing team.

Celebrate Your Team in Meaningful Ways

One of the simplest and most effective ways to build engagement is through recognition. Celebrating birthdays and work anniversaries gives you the opportunity to show genuine appreciation.

For birthdays, consider small but thoughtful gestures—such as bringing in a favorite dessert, organizing a team lunch, flowers, or giving a personalized gift. For milestone anniversaries, you might choose to elevate the experience with a special lunch outside the office with dedicated one-on-one time.

Stepping away from the daily routine to focus on the individual sends a powerful message: they matter.

Make Appreciation Personal

When recognizing occasions like Dental Assistants Week, Dental Hygienists Week, or Administrative Professionals Day, go beyond generic gestures. These celebrations often span a full week, offering the perfect opportunity to create a memorable experience for your employees.

Consider planning something different each day—morning coffee and pastries, catered lunches, or small personalized gifts. One strategy that has worked well in my practice is having team members complete a simple preference form. By learning their favorite foods, drinks, stores, and hobbies, you can tailor your appreciation gifts to each individual. This level of personalization makes employees feel truly seen and valued.

Create Opportunities for Fun and Connection

Team bonding doesn’t always have to be formal. In fact, some of the most meaningful connections happen during fun, social moments.

Potluck gatherings are a great example of this. You can tie them to seasonal events—such as baseball’s opening day, summer luaus, or ice cream socials—to create excitement. Adding a fun, interactive game and a small prize can make the experience even more engaging.

These moments can give your team something to look forward to and help foster stronger interpersonal relationships across multiple departments.

Invest in Team Experiences

Shared experiences outside the office can significantly strengthen team dynamics. Continuing education events, whether local or destination-based, provide both professional growth and valuable bonding time.

You can also consider surprise rewards for exceptional performance. An unexpected day off, a spa outing, or even a group shopping trip can go a long way in showing appreciation. These gestures reinforce positive behaviors and demonstrate that hard work and a great attitude do not go unnoticed.

Rethink Your Team Meetings

Team meetings are often viewed as routine—or worse, dreaded. But with a thoughtful approach, they can become one of your most powerful engagement tools.

Avoid meetings that focus solely on metrics or turn into complaint sessions. Instead, lead with encouragement, recognition, and constructive dialogue. Encourage team input and create opportunities for participation.

To keep energy high, consider adding other fun activities such as trivia games, small group activities, or themed discussions. For example, one of our most successful meetings centered around health and wellness. We introduced a month-long challenge encouraging hydration, physical activity, and stress management. Not only did the team enjoy the experience, but it also promoted healthier habits. Adding incentives—like a reward for top participants—can further boost engagement.

The Impact of an Engaged Team

When employees feel appreciated and enjoy coming to work, the results are undeniable. Morale improves, productivity increases, and the overall culture becomes more positive and collaborative.

These strategies have been highly effective in my own practice, and I’m confident they can make a meaningful difference in yours as well. By prioritizing appreciation, connection, and engagement, you’ll not only build a stronger team—you’ll create an environment where people are motivated to perform at their very best.
