Practicing dental sleep medicine is a goal for many, but a reality for few. The complexity of the reimbursement process has provided enough frustration that many dental offices abandon the potentially lifesaving and profitable area of practice.
I’ve developed strategies designed to connect the essential services patients require to the well-deserved reimbursement. Having educated offices nationally, they now understand how to establish functional and sustainable billing protocols for sleep apnea, focusing on proper medical documentation and the break-down of policies for Medicare and private insurances. Medical coding and billing is often last picked for the proverbial dodge ball game because big insurance doesn’t seem to want us to understand the process. However, that is all medical billing is – a process, and it can be learned.
If you looking to implement dental sleep medicine into your practice, are struggling with workflow of dental sleep medicine or have an established practice that needs to advance to the next level, I have established highly effective processes and have the knowledge to share so you can implement DSM to the highest level of care for your patients. Let’s educate your chapter on where to start!
In addition to speaking and consulting roles, I am on the Provider Outreach and Education committee for Medicare DME for Jurisdictions A, D, have co-authored an e-book Medicare: What Every Dentists Needs to Know NOW, and a contributing author of The Clinician’s Handbook for Dental Sleep Medicine, by Dr. Ken Berley and Dr. Steve Carstensen. I am active in the WNY Chapter of AADOM as vice-president, a Fellow of AADOM, faculty of Dental Medical University and a founding facilitator of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine Mastery series while holding a position with a practice exclusive to treating sleep apnea, putting theory into practice every day.

Working in healthcare for more than 20 years, Amy’s passion for risk management began after her own identity was compromised as a result of an improperly educated staff losing her X-rays. That passion has turned into a commitment to provide an easy to understand approach to complex regulations. Amy’s relatable stories of real-life data breaches make an otherwise boring and complicated topic easy to ingest.
As president of ACS Technologies, LLC, Amy oversees two divisions within the company. The largest, and her favorite, is the Training Division. Amy educates and consults dental practices specializing in HIPAA, Information Technology Security, Technology Disaster Preparedness, and Data Breach Mitigation. She also implements comprehensive compliance programs into practices, instilling confidence in organizations necessary for compliance. Amy is highly sought after to consult on data breach mitigations; she aids in minimizing the damage so practices can survive financially intact. Additionally, she consults for IT Providers nationally to ensure they understand HIPAA as it applies to themselves, as well as their dental clients. This enables IT Providers to continue driving the industry forward in a secure manner. The second department is the IT Security Services Division. Amy successfully manages the IT company catering to dental practices that desire to be safe, secure, proactive, and compliant with HIPAA.
Amy stays informed of evolving regulations and the ever-changing education landscape. In addition to ASCA and ADMC, she maintains memberships with Health Care Compliance Association, FBI Infragard, Cyber Health Working Group, HHS 405d, ASCII, Sonoma County Professional Women, and Sonoma County Professional Women. She is licensed by the Dental Board of California and the Academy of General Dentistry.
