The Austin, TX Chapter Celebrates at Lucy Hobbs Project
Submitted by Jennifer Randall, DAADOM, Austin, TX Chapter President
AADOM’s Austin, TX Chapter committee members Martha and Mary celebrated women in dentistry at the 2nd Annual Austin Lucy Hobbs Project. This event offers opportunities surrounding three pillars; networking, innovation, and giving back.
The Lucy Hobbs Project is named in honor of Lucy Hobbs, who was the first woman in dentistry. Lucy was born in 1833 and was refused admission to dental school because of her gender. Lucy Hobbs defied nearly a decade of resistance, graduating from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery and becoming the first licensed female dentist in 1866. She led with clinical proficiency and innovative thinking; then she mentored others to do the same. Benco Dental’s Lucy Hobbs Project Awards honor women in dentistry who personify that same spirit.
