Q: What type of practice do you work in?
A: General dentistry.
Q: What is your title?
A: Office manager.
Q: How long have you been with this practice?
A: 19 years, five years as an office manager.
Q: What are some of the duties you are responsible for within your practice?
A: When you are an office manager, the lists of responsibilities never end.
I am responsible for accounts payable and accounts receivable, running all reports and meeting with the doctors, keeping the team motivated, and the day running smoothly, to name a few.
Also, what I call “putting out fires.” All of those things that come up unexpectedly throughout the day!
Q: What is the most rewarding aspect of your career?
A: The most rewarding part of my career is making a difference in people’s lives.
There are so many mundane tasks that have to be accomplished throughout the day. But when I take time to genuinely listen to a patient or staff member, encourage them, and make them feel like they are not alone – that there is someone who cares, that is what really makes my day.
Sometimes all people need is a listening ear.
I also love it when we can help patients feel confident and maybe even help them truly smile. Occasionally, people cannot remember the last time they have really smiled for feeling embarrassed about their teeth.
Q: What do you see as some of the benefits of membership to AADOM?
A: AADOM offers a wealth of information in a variety of avenues.
I love the website and webinars that are offered, but the members’ comradery and their willingness to offer help and insight are invaluable.
Q: What advice would you give to a new office manager just starting out?
A: Never stop learning!
I started my dentistry career almost 2 decades ago as a dental assistant who was trained on the job. I learned early on that no matter what, no one could ever take away my knowledge.
The more I learned about all aspects of dentistry, the better off I was.
I worked for many years as a dental assistant and then cross-trained to the front office and am now the first to hold the position of office manager in my practice.
Always take time to invest in yourself. When you are better, your team is better!
Q: Do you or your practice support any charitable organizations or events?
A: We participate with Donated Dental through Dental Lifeline Network and also see patients through a local free medical clinic in our community called Edwards Street Fellowship Health Clinic.
My doctors also travel to Honduras frequently with the BMDMI to serve at a clinic there.
Q: What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of work?
A: I enjoy being outdoors. I love to camp and kayak. I love spending time with my friends and family.
